Before anyone asks, Guyana is in South America, not Africa. Home to the infamous Jim Jones mass suicide/murder cult debacle. And before anyone ELSE asks....no I didn't drink the purple Kool-Aid.
I actually volunteered to go on this trip. I mean, how many other times am I going to get to go to Guyana? $400 in shots and $60 in hallucination-inducing Malaria pills later, I'm on the plane to Guyana. Here's a brief photojournal of my trip along with some of my world-famous commentary. More commentary will be added at a later date.
February 8
Left Atlanta for Miami on Delta....first class....nice :)
Miami airport was HELLACIOUS on this day! Luckily the terminal we were going to wasn't as crowded and security was a breeze! The folks at British West Indies Airlines were nice enough to give us passes to the America Room since we had first class tickets. It was here that the first of many customs and immigration forms were filled out. I now know my passport number by heart!
This is the sunset I was greeted with while flying from Miami to Bridgetown, Barbados. We didn't get to deplane in Barbados, so I don't really have any good pictures from there.
First things first, Guyana is HOT. Hot and humid! I thought Florida was hot and humid....no way. It's way too hot for a place where you can't even drink the water! Cheddi Jagan International Airport is about 45 minutes outside of Georgetown. Our driver, Jerome, met us after we went through customs and immigration and took us on what was to be the first of many high-speed rides on treacherous roads.
NOTE: Due to civil unrest and the constant threat of riots and harm to foreigners, we were not allowed to venture out on our own without being driven by Jerome, who was armed and never drove the same path twice! Many of these pictures were taken from the car going about 90kph through the streets of Georgetown.
This is the lobby/sitting area of the Le Meridien Pegasus Georgetown. It is the only hotel safe enough that we could stay in. All of our meals were consumed here as well. As well as a few Banks Beers each night :)
My room overlooked the Demarrara River/Atlantic Ocean delta. Unfortunately, I didn't even think I'd need my power converter and came to find that all of the outlets but 1 were 220v UK standard. Oops!
Pool deck
This was the view from my balcony.
A couple views from in front of the client's building. The last one is the building itself with Rob walking out looking at me like I'm some sort of idiot!
The next few pictures are pretty random. I'm not going to put them into any order either, so there :P
According to Jerome, this is the Guyana Police Academy. It was right next to our hotel too. Good security, must be why we stayed there!
One of the churches that remains from the days of British colonization. There is another huge white wooden church that is the tallest wooden church still standing, but I didn't get a good picture of it.
Nothing spectacular....I just thought it was funny that there were brand new Popeyes, KFC, and Pizza Hut in Guyana.
Horses and other livestock grazing along the side of the road in downtown Georgetown.
One of Georgetown's primary schools. Interestingly, a carry-over from the French communist rule colonial times, all the students wear uniforms.
A random street in the Kingston neighborhood.
The Guyana National Cricket Field. Soon to host preliminary rounds of the World Cricket Cup.
The United Nations building in the Stabroek district.
Just a random street in downtown Georgetown.
